The Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church has served various immigrant communities in the neighborhood over the years. Founded by Lutheran immigrants in 1801, it was purchased in 1841 by Reverend John Hughes of the Roman Catholic Diocese of New York after many Protestant families were removed from the area formerly known as the “Five Points.”
The Parish of the Transfiguration has evolved alongside the community, consistently serving as a place of worship for locals—first a large Irish and Italian population, and now a significant Chinese population. Because of this, the church has earned the nickname “Church of Immigrants.”
