New Kam Man

New Kam Man

New Kam Man is located at 200 Canal Street in the heart of Manhattans Chinatown. New Kam Man has been in Winnie Wu’s family for over 5 decades. It is a family run business dating back to the 1970’s. It is considered the first Chinese supermarket in New York City. It was opened by a group of immigrants from Hong Kong as a gate way for locals to get items imported from Asia. They were the first supermarket to offer live seafood, they later added Chinese ceramics and specialty teas. When Winnie commissioned me to draw this piece, she wanted to capture elements from her childhood with elements from today. As a child Ms. Wu remembers being greeted by the ceramics in the window as she ran to the grocery store from school. She also remembers how her father would make deliveries to the store using a hand truck. Now she loves seeing all the different people go in out of the store with, wheeled grocery carts and boba teas in hand.
