Neon Sign International District Albuquerque

This drawing imagines a neon sign at night that could connect Albuquerque’s International District to Route 66. The International District is home to many Asian American businesses, but visually it feels disconnected from Route 66 because it lacks the iconic neon signage that’s a hallmark of the road elsewhere. While traveling Route 66 at night, I felt that a new sign directing travelers to this vibrant neighborhood would really help the local businesses. This drawing is my vision of what that sign could look like.

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), we are working with local artists and community partners to bring this neon sign to life as a beacon for the International District and a celebration of its unique cultural identity.
