Mott Street (oldest street) and Chinese street sign. Starting in 1969, Chinese language signs arrived in Chinatown to accommodate a new wave of immigration. Handwritten calligraphy was eventually used for the signs, as the footprint of Chinatown expanded in the 1980s. Mott Street is one of the historic streets that has grown with Chinatown’s expansion. Today, bilingual signs are being replaced by English only ones, but there are efforts to preserve the heritage of Chinatown streets. Council Member Chris Marte recently introduced legislation to keep the bilingual signs.
