In 2021, Illinois made history by becoming the first state to mandate the teaching of Asian American history in public schools with the passage of the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act. This groundbreaking legislation requires schools to include instruction on the history and contributions of Asian Americans to the economic, cultural, social, and political development of the United States.
Introduced during a rise in violence against the Asian American community, the TEAACH Act aims to promote cross-cultural understanding, foster inclusivity, and advance racial equity through education.
