In the 1800’s China was forced to open its border to trade after losing the opium wars to England. The war was followed by a devastating drought and flood that sent the country’s economy into a downward spiral, leaving people hungry and hopeless. However, the currents of the pacific brought a rumor of a mountain made of gold in northern California. Which lead to 20,000 Chinese men cramming into steamships with nothing more than a small suitcase and hope to find riches to feed the families members they left behind. They made their way from the Pearl River Delta to Hong Kong and from there they traveled 6,000 treacherous nautical miles to the west coast of America in search of the Gam Saan (gold mountain).
