Columbus Park lies at the heart of the infamous Five Points neighborhood, once one of the most dangerous areas in the 1800s. Over the years, it has been a site of significant gatherings, including the historic 1982 Garment Workers Chinatown Rally, where 20,000 Chinese American women protested for better wages and working conditions. More recently, it has been a hub for protests against the proposed Chinatown mega jail.

In 2019, a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the first provisional president of the Republic of China, was installed in the park. The statue bears the inscription, “All Under Heaven Are Equal,” a Confucian motto symbolizing unity and equality.

Today, Columbus Park is a vibrant gathering place for the elderly, rain or shine. Seniors meet daily to play Chinese chess, practice Tai Chi, and perform traditional Chinese music. The park remains a cherished space where the community gathers, preserving its traditions and fostering a sense of belonging.
