Columbus Park is in the heart of the infamous Five Points neighborhood, one of the most dangerous areas of the 1800s. It has been the site of many gatherings, including the 1982 Garment Workers Chinatown Rally, when 20,000 Chinese American women walked out in protest for better wages and working conditions, and more recently, protests against the proposed Chinatown mega jail. In 2019, a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the first provisional president of the Republic of China, was installed, with the inscription “All Under Heaven Are Equal”, the Confucian motto. Columbus Park is a popular gathering place for the elderly. Every day, rain or shine, seniors meet up to play Chinese chess, practice Tai Chi and perform traditional Chinese music. It is a place where the community can gather and feel at home.
