Hop Kee is a Cantonese restaurant that preserves its family heritage on Mott Street. It was first opened in 1968 by current owner Peter Lee’s father after the family immigrated from Hong Kong. There have been some menu updates to cater to a new generation of eaters, but one thing that remains unchanged is their famous and unique Cantonese-style crabs with black bean sauce. Lee’s father created the crab recipe, and few places serve a similar dish. Hop Kee holds its old traditions close; long known as a spot for a late-night bite, it opens until 1 am. Lee hopes it will continue to be a place of family and belonging.
